This folk toy is made from papier-mâché and is called a Hariko doll. These dolls originated in the Edo period in Kurayoshi in the Tottoro prefecture.They were given to young girls as good luck charms and as dolls to play with. They are still popular gifts. These particular dolls are from the 50-60s and are 17cm in length. Each is signed by the artist Miyoshi Heikichi and come boxed with an explanation in Japanese.
