description
This piece appears to have once been part of a Japanese banner or flag. The silk woven area is approximately 15 x 18 inches. The remainder of the piece is a red felt-like fine wool. The white applique work on the upper reverse is a white wool felt. The metallic fringe is strong and durable. The silk woven area on black shu silk has aged with some slackness of threads but no visible breakages or deterioration. The fabrics, design and condition suggest that it was made in the 1910-30 period.
